Take pleasure in village life!

Built in 1878, this beautiful traditional two storey Santorini Mansion is located in the heart of the picturesque village of Megalochori. This is one of two Mansions in the portfolio that was once owned by one of the most powerful families on the island.

At the turn of the century the first floor would have been occupied by the family with the ground floor serving as the winery and cellar. The Vinsanto dessert wine produced was exported to Russia, where it was used by the Russian Orthodox Church for Holy Communion. Unfortunately, this all came to an endwith the Russian Revolution which had a big impact on the wealth of families in this once flourishing village. The original structure has been sensitively renovated. Restored to its original splendour, retaining the original layout and traditional features, the gracious proportions and weathered building materials speak for themselves. Mansion 1878 consists of two spacious self – contained units with a shared pool. Sensuality abounds in tasteful decoration and hand picked antiques from the past.

From the village square a small winding road leads to the Mansion. The large cobbled private courtyard, complete with pool is surrounded by potted shrubs and trees that are intimate in scale. A stone stairway leads up to the first floor with large terraces and panoramic views of the village on the horizon. The house consists of a traditional, bucolic, well equipped kitchen, which leads into the large dining room with original wooden floors and vaulted ceiling, perfect for entertaining. A comfortable lounge, simple, yet aristocratic, adjoins the dining area.

The spacious master bedroom is comfortable, bright and airy, where fascinating plays on light take place. A staircase leads to a private landing and second large double bedroom. The bathroom with wood and stone features servicing both rooms, is resplendent.

Area Description

Literally translated into "Big Village", which is a mere euphemism, this island settlement is known to have been populated since the middle of the 17th century. Host to the mansions of some of the most powerful families who inhabited the island, it is also famous for its sweet wine "Vinsanto", which is still exported all over the world. The architecture that resulted from the riches of its inhabitants truly stands out from every vantage point of the village. Megalochori has withstood the gradual erosion of village life through rural depopulation as some of the island’s largest vineyards situated here and thus continue to provide a livelihood to its inhabitants. Its lively community of permanent residents adds local flavour and charm to the village’s narrow roads which in turn beg to be explored. Peace and tranquility best describe one of the few traditional settlements on the island. Situated 9.5 kilometers from Fira, Megalochori is within easy reach of Akrotiri and many other beaches on the island. Megalochori presents a multitude of interesting faces, many of whom, you may well get to know during your stay. "Raki" the excellent taverna located in the village, is managed by Santorini Villas.
